Journal Submissions

Writing submissions to Half Mystic Journal's sixth issue are now open, around the theme of interlude: the keystrokes of transitory—the movement in the rest—the inhale before the storm. An interlude is a short piece, or portion of a piece, that resides & serves as a transition in between two main pieces of music. All submissions should in some way conform to this theme.

We consider all types of writing (including poetry, fiction, drama, creative nonfiction, and hybrid work) as long as it pertains in some way to music.

You may submit up to three pieces. Please keep all pieces under 3000 words. We do not accept previously-published writing, including on personal blogs. Simultaneous submissions are welcome. We only publish predominantly English pieces—no translations for now.

Please don't send us any work with quoted song lyrics, due to copyright limitations. You may use song titles and names of performers, and you may refer to or paraphrase song lyrics, but unless the songs you are quoting are in the public domain (i.e. written before 1920), we cannot publish them.

Half Mystic is an ardent supporter of diverse creators and their work. Please do send us pieces that explore the experiences of minorities—we would love to receive them. Also know that we do not tolerate work that contains sexist, racist, homophobic, transphobic, xenophobic, ableist, ageist, classist, fat-shaming, abusive, or otherwise discriminatory content. Such work will be automatically rejected.

Above all: we want you to twist and bend, stretch the limits, suffuse us with the rhythm of innovation. We fall in love with pieces that make us rethink what music means.

Send us your work at journal@halfmystic.com. The subject line should be "Journal Submission: [Category], [Title], [Name]" (e.g. "Journal Submission: Poem, William Carlos Williams, This Is Just to Say"). Please also include a 120 word or shorter contributor bio, to be included in the issue in the case that your piece is accepted for publication.

We highly recommend that you take a look at Half Mystic Journal’s past issues to get a feel for our aesthetic and the types of work we love.

Paste your writing into the body of the email (or, if the formatting is experimental, attach as a Word document). And please do include a small note to us in the body. Say hello. Tell us about yourself. Send us a song you've been loving lately, or a whole playlist. Tell us why you've chosen our journal as a home for your lovely piece. We want to know you—and we care a lot more about your favourite ice cream flavours and the songs that keep getting stuck in your head than we do about past publications or awards.

We do our best to respond to submissions within three weeks. That said, as we are a very small journal running mostly on love, caffeine, and a damn good mixtape, we may take longer during heavy submission periods. If you have not heard back from us after five weeks, please do email us to inquire. Gentle nudging never results in bad feelings, we promise.

At the moment we cannot pay our contributors. However, contributors do receive complimentary eBook copies of the issue they are featured in, along with the Half Mystic community's full love and support in all of their future endeavours.

Manuscript Submissions

We are always accepting manuscript submissions. Half Mystic Press publishes the following types of books: poetry, essay, and short story collections; drama; memoirs; novellas; full-length novels; experimental work.

We do not publish books of genre, lyrics without music, or critical work. Your manuscript must be at least 30 single-spaced pages, and it must be complete.

Please note that, unlike in our journal, we do publish books that are not overtly music-themed. When we ask for music, we mean rhythm, we mean story, we mean luminescence and chaos, pulsing loneliness, ordinary madness, thunder on loop, violent quietude, shivering wonder. We mean truth. We mean work that we can’t help but listen to on repeat, work that makes us believe there is something bigger than all of this endless static.

When we ask for music, we mean the undefined and the indefinable. Send us your symphony. We promise we won’t flinch.

At least three-quarters of the collection must be previously unpublished in any form. We welcome simultaneous submissions, but please let us know immediately if your manuscript finds a home elsewhere. We only publish predominantly English manuscripts—no translations for now.

Half Mystic is an ardent supporter of diverse creators and their work; we believe that minority writers, especially in these times, have the truest music thrumming in their chests. We welcome manuscripts that explore and centre around the experiences of minorities.

For poetry, essay, and short story collections, please send the full manuscript; for all other genres, please send the first half of the manuscript. Email your book as a PDF to press@halfmystic.com. We read all submissions blindly, so do not include any identifying information in the manuscript file.

We highly recommend that you read past books from Half Mystic Press to get a feel for our aesthetic and the types of work we love.

The subject line of your email should be: “Manuscript Submission: [Genre], [Title], [Name]” (e.g. “Manuscript Submission: Poetry Collection, The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, T.S. Eliot”). In the body of the email, include a third-person bio up to 250 words long, a list of acknowledgements of organisations where excerpts from the book have been published (if any), a description of what music means to you, and an explanation of why you’ve chosen Half Mystic Press as a home for your lovely work. We accept submissions both from agented and unagented writers.

We are a very small press running mostly on love, caffeine, and a damn good mixtape, but we aim to get back to you within two months. If it’s been three months and you haven’t received a response, feel free to send us an email to check in. Polite enquiries are never taken badly, we promise.

Please only submit one manuscript at a time. If we reject one of your submissions, we ask that you wait at least six months before submitting again.

Radio Submissions

Half Mystic Radio is always open to poetry submissions for our next episodes and seasons.

We consider recordings of all genres of original poetry. Please submit only one recording, four to ten minutes long, containing no more than three poems.

Send us your work at radio@halfmystic.com. The subject line should be "Radio Submission: Poetry, [Title], [Name]" (e.g. "Radio Submission: Poetry, Margaret Atwood, Late August"). Please also include a 120 word or shorter contributor bio, to be included in the show notes in the case that your piece is accepted to be featured on the podcast.

Please note that, unlike in our journal, we do share poems on Half Mystic Radio that are not overtly music-themed.

The poems you submit may be previously published, but may not ever have been previously performed. We only share predominantly English poems on Half Mystic Radio—no translations for now.
